Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1

Clinical Case Summary & Presentation:

Each student is required to complete a clinical case presentation. This will involve the following criteria:

Select a patient (adult, pediatric, neonate) from clinical site. Be sure to adhere to appropriate HIPAA requirements regarding patient information confidentiality policies.

You must write up a summary of the case presentation in 800-1000 words in length. You may use APA or MLA format. Be sure to cite and reference any source material used

The outline of the content of your presentation write up must include:

1. History and Physical Exam
2. Pathophysiology
3. Diagnostics
4. Treatment/Plan of care
5. In/Out patient course summary
6. Recommendations.

*The paper is designed to talk about your patient’s course of stay in the hospital. You’ll describe this above in the outline: Why this patient was admitted? (What the problem was), What happened? What was done to help this patient? (Diagnostics/ Procedures/ Mech Vent). Has this patient been discharged from the hospital or is still admitted? (Is this patient able to go home?/ Patient doing well?/ Or not, and why?)

**Focus on the respiratory aspect of your patient’s condition…Does your patient require mechanical ventilation? And why? Were there any special procedures that were done to maintain a patent airway? Tracheostomy tube placed? Any medications (i.e. SPINRAZA) that were given. How would these medications benefit your patient? Efficacy?

Each team will present their case orally using PowerPoint slides (or other visual substitute). Slides are limited to 15 maximum.
Your presentation is limited to 15 minutes, to include a Q&A session to follow. Grading rubric will be provided to you for reference.
Each member of the team must participate in the presentation.
