Assignment Task
This assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your strength in critically assessing all the above features in an area of health or social care service within the scope of your employment (Mental Health Nursing in TOPAS The Older People Assessment Service).  The objective is to produce a management report which provides clinical or managerial guidelines on how to improve continuity and coordination of care or treatment, enabling more effective resource planningYour assignment should include:

·         Definition of the service concept of your chosen service, and an outline of the current service delivery process.

·         An evaluation of its current effectiveness

·         An identification of specific problem areas, or opportunities for further development

·         Identification of appropriate measures by which to judge the performance of the process

·         Recommendations for improvement to the service and if appropriate, changes to the means by which quality is measured.

Format:

The management report should be no longer than 3,000 words (excluding Appendices & References).  The structure is as follows:

  • A Title Page
  • An Executive Summary
  • A List of Contents
  • An Introduction, outlining the service you are considering and the purpose of your report.
  • An Analysis of those factors outlined in the section above.
  • Recommendations, arising from a critical evaluation of the analysis, and including, if appropriate, short, mid and long term proposals.
  • A Conclusion, summarising the improvements proposed and the benefits.
  • References*
  • Appendices

Context:

Understanding the needs of the service user is a crucial precursor in service design. Service design requires one to consider the nature of the operating system (the resources to be employed and the type of process which best serves the system objectives amongst other factors), to establish the measures which will assess the performance of the operating system, and to choose an appropriate quality management system which will ensure these measures are met at a satisfactory or greater level.  The service design, however, has to take into account the needs of other stakeholders, whose expectations might not be directly aligned with those of the immediate service user.

Avoiding plagiarismWhen you write an essay, report or dissertation you should always cite the published sources to which you quote, refer to or use as evidence, otherwise you are likely to be committing plagiarism, which is a form of academic misconduct with potentially very serious consequences. References need to be made both within the text and in a list at the end.

The aim in doing this is to ensure that somebody reading your work can easily find these sources for themselves. This applies to whether you are using a book, a report, a journal article or an Internet site. You will probably know from your own experience how much easier it is to find a reference when a reading list or bibliography is clear and unambiguous.
