Unit 9: Smoking and Alcohol Use

Attending live Seminars is important to your academic success, and attendance is highly recommended. You must either attend the live Seminar or you must complete the Seminar alternative assignment in order to earn points for this part of the class.

This week in Seminar, you will cover the model of health promotion and disease prevention. You also will look at the two addictions of alcohol and smoking, and learn ways to treat the addiction.

Why is it important to follow a model to explain and treat substance use? What is the risk of not following a model?
What are factors that contribute to substance use?
Why are adolescents often targeted for substance use prevention programs? Is enough being done? What causes some adolescents to experiment with substances even after attending well-regarded prevention programs?

You will benefit most from completing Seminar Option 1. However, if you are unable to attend you have the opportunity to make up the points by listening to the Seminar archive and writing a paper summarizing the Seminar. You should create your paper in Microsoft Word and your work should be formatted in APA style. Your paper should be composed in complete sentences and paragraphs and be at least 500 words in length.
