Sally Ride was the first female US astronaut.

Sally Ride was an American who became the first female astronaut on June 18 1983 when she flew in the Challenger space shuttle. She did a second flight in 1984.

The first woman in space was the Russian Valentina Tereshkova in 1963. She was not technically an astronaut as the Russian term is cosmonaut.
