Contact metamorphism is a highly localized kind while regional is more widespread. Contact metamorphism usually happens when an intrusive body (molten igneous mass) penetrates overlying rocks. The high temperature of the intrusive brings about metamorphism around the contact areas and sometimes new mineralization. Regional metamorphism is usually brought about by widespread tectonic movements that exert pressure on several masses or rock.
