As we reviewed last week, critical appraisal tools have been developed to guide you through the process of evaluating many types of research (see Table 3.6 of your LoBiondo-Wood and Haber text). These tools are tailored to the specifics of a given research methodology (for example, clinical trials, cohort studies, qualitative research, systematic reviews). There are many tools available to help you critically appraise research. Whichever tool is used, the questions, or criteria, are very similar. For this course, we will use the Fuld Institute of EBP’s RCA tools that are linked for your use and review. Chapter 18 of your LoBiondo-Wood and Haber text provides an example study and critical appraisal of a quantitative research article.
