Energy Metabolism and Diabetes

Introduction:

All living organisms must take in and process energy to perform chemical and physical activities essential for life. Cells in our body convert the energy in carbohydrates and fats (and to a lesser extent proteins) to a usable form through the process of cellular respiration. Diabetes is a common disease that results from the malfunction of normal energy metabolism. There are about 425 million people currently living with diabetes, and this number is expected to increase to about 630 million by 2045, making diabetes one of the largest global public health issues of our time. In this module, you will learn more about energy metabolism and the the types, causes, consequences, and treatments associated with diabetes.

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

– Describe the process of energy metabolism through aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration

– Differentiate between the different types of diabetes

– Identify the risk factors for developing diabetes

– Describe the physical effects of diabetes

– Describe treatments for diabetes
