Week 1 Assignment 3: Research, EBP, and QI

Week 1 Assignment 3: Research, EBP, and QI

It is important to be able to distinguish between research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement projects. In this assignment you will have the opportunity to critically analyze these areas and create a research project, EBP project, and QI project that all use the same nursing or advanced practice nursing topic.

Assignment Instructions

Using the Research, EBP, QI Form (Word) , identify a topic and develop the title, purpose statement, clinical question, and design for a Research project, EBP project, and QI project. Each of these projects should be on the same broad topic.

Research, EBP, QI Form

Directions: Identify a topic and describe how you could set up three separate projects: a research project, an EBP project, and a QI project to address your topic. See example provided below.

Example

Topic: VTE prophylaxis s/p hip fracture repair in elderly

Research

EBP

QI

Proposed Title

Safety and effectiveness of the direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban as compared to low molecular weight heparin in elderly patients who have undergone hip fracture repair surgery.

Evidence based management of VTE prophylaxis after hip fracture repair surgery.

Development of a VTE Prophylaxis protocol status post hip fracture repair surgery.

Proposed Question

Is rivaroxaban as safe and effective as low molecular weight heparin in elderly patients who have undergone hip fracture repair surgery?

In elderly patients who have undergone hip fracture repair surgery (P), is rivaroxaban (I) as safe and effective as low molecular weight heparin (C) on preventing venous thrombus embolisms (O).

What are our organization’s current VTE rates? Does this meet benchmark data? Is there a current protocol? What evidence is there for a change in protocol?

Proposed Purpose Statement

The purpose of this research is to determine if the direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban is as safe and effective as low molecular weight heparin

The purpose of this project is to improve VTE rates in elderly patients who have undergone hip fracture repair surgery.

The purpose of this project is to improve patient safety and quality (VTE rates) within the hospital system through the development of VTE prophylaxis protocols status post hip fracture repair surgery.

Proposed Design

Quantitative, quasi-experimental retrospective cohort study
