In the past few weeks we have been discussing the process of “Bio-prospecting” through cinnamon, rubber, and guano. We have seen that there are various themes intersecting: market needs, systems of knowledge, industrialization, and sustainability.
The reading “Bitter Roots” has examined these points from medicinal plants from Africa to treat malaria and various other ailments. I want you to read the introduction and CHPS 3 or 5, and connect what you learn from there to study of one of the commodities we studied in class.
In this paper I am looking to see if you can describe bio-prospecting and the tensions that arise between scientists and local communities over a crop. The point is to show you have two notions of systems of knowledge at the center of problems. Essay must be two full pages at minimum and chicago style citations 12-font and Times New roman. I have attached the ” Bitter Roots” reading.
