1. Compare the cellular processes of respiration and photosynthesis as opposite reactions. Consider that, respiration releases energy for cellular use and photosynthesis uses light energy and water to capture carbon and release oxygen. Fossil fuel use is similar to respiration in that it releases the energy that plants captured eons ago. Be specific in your comparison including where and when these processes occur, inputs vs outputs and energy source vs energy output.

2. With your comparison as a foundation, read “Flower Power: Genetic Modification Could Amply Boost Plants’ Carbon-Capture and Bioenergy Capacity.” If plants or algae could be genetically engineered to capture twice as much carbon as they do now, would you support the release of these genetically modified organisms to address climate change? Why or why not? What could be the consequences?
