Beginning thematic analysis:
Read Green, J (2013) pp. 203-232 (PDF included) to understand the coding
For this assignment you will use the coded transcript you worked on in the Collaboration
(Please see code transcript included) to begin the process of thematic analysis. Before you do
this, re-read the sections in Bazeley (2009, pp.9-12) paper, ‘Moving from ‘Garden Path Analysis’
Toward a Coherent Model’ and the section in the Braun and Clarke (2006, pp.89-91) paper
‘Phase 3: searching for themes’. Using the coded transcript:
1. Re-read the transcript carefully and consider how the codes might be grouped, how they
relate to each other and whether they are descriptive or analytical.
2. Bearing in mind the research question and purpose, group the codes into larger themes
and map these out showing links between them using the mind map approach taken in
the Braun and Clarke paper.
3. Briefly, describe the main themes and the ways they relate to each other, using one or two
quotations per theme to illuminate your description. Quotations and mind map are not
included in the word count.
