About NIMS

NIMS, fully known as the National Incident Management System, is a program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, commonly known as FEMA. FEMA is one of the operational and support components of the Department of Homeland Security, DHS. The DHS was formed in response to ensure the protection of the American homeland in 2001 by President G.W. Bush in response to the 9/11 attacks.

The Structure of NIMS

NIMS is organized into standard incident command centers which are based on the following key organization systems:

1. The Incident Command System (ICS)

2. The Multiagency Coordination System

3. Public Information Systems

The Role and Function of NIMS

The role of NIMS is to provide a thorough approach in incident management which can be applied into any emergency regardless of its size or type. This approach is intended to be highly flexible and standardized for efficient response to any incident.

NIMS is vital to the Americans in that it provides national awareness, preparedness and management of disasters thus helping keep the American people safe.

The incorporation of entire communities in disaster preparedness. Organizing all allocated resources to ensure that they are well allocated in preparedness and recovery for any calamity.
