TASK : Investigation by using an experimental method on terrestrial ecosystem. (Relationship between one biotic and abiotic)

Aim: To investigate the relationship between light intensity and insect diversity. This will be done by using a pitfall trap to trap insects in different areas where light intensity varies, and then classifying the insects to calculate insect concentration which is a measure of insect diversity.

scientific background

Background information about the task: I placed 4 pitfall traps, two in an area with high light intensity, and two in an area with low light intensity. I checked back up on the traps after 6 hours and classified the species as thee following:

  1. High light intensity beakers: 3 spiders, 2 ants, 1 lady bug
  2. Low light intensity beakers: 6 spiders, 4 ants, 2 lady bugs
  • this is due to the fact that the lower intensity pitfall traps were placed in the shade next to trees, hence that may be an explanation

Light intensity should be made up or approximated for areas in the shade and in the open
