Recommendations and the Future of Nursing discussion

1.

The addressed recommendations in my practice environment is recommendation number six that advocates nurses engage in lifelong learning (Institute of medicine, 2010). Our facility addresses this recommendation by providing free continuing education credits so we can complete the necessary education hours. Our facility also provides educational materials on healthstream. We have to do annual competencies on the healthstream and when new educational material is available, we are required to complete that beside the annual competencies. Another incentive provided by our facility is tuition reimbursement program that encourage nurses to advance their education. Though our facility hires nurses with associate degree, they encourage us to obtain our BSN. Though the tuition assistance they offer is minimal, it is still encouraging especially for some employees with financial limitation to further their education.

The Institute of Medicine ‘s (IOM) report The Future of Nursing has cited several recommendations as a blueprint for the Future of Nursing. The recommendations are to help transform nursing and prepare nurses for the increasingly changing and complex healthcare system. In the state of Georgia an action coalition was formed to advance the recommendations of the IOM report. Wheeler 2014 reported, the Georgia Nursing Leadership Coalition(GNLC) has been working on advancing all of the recommendations but, they have placed more emphasis on recommendation #1(Remove scope of practice barriers), #3(Implement nurse residency programs), #4( Increased the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020), #5(Double the number of nurses with doctorate by 2020) and #8 ( Build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of inter-professional health care workforce data).  Recommendation #8 infrastructure was able to be implemented through GNLC leadership collaborating with the Georgia Board of Nursing, Georgia Nursing Association and the Secretary of State which changed the survey presented to nurses when they renew their license so certain data can be capture.  Wheeler (2014) stated, “this change was a huge achievement to enable us to generate and disseminate preliminary report about the state’s nursing workforce.” pg. 1. My organization has implemented recommendation # 3- nursing residency program (IOM,2011). The recommendation was implemented to assist new graduate nurses to transition smoothly into the clinical practice environment and deliver safe patient care. Some of the outcomes are it helps reduce the high nurse turnover rate, give the nurses more confidence to practice, decrease their level of stress and anxiety level and increase competence.
