This is the Hunger Banquet below, you will be working with your group to complete this topic and then posting your own work on this page.

The Exercise:

This is a simulation game approximating the distribution of purchasing power, population and the food as it is in the real world.

The goal of this activity is to utilize the purchasing power that individuals have in the First World (developed), Second World (Developing), and the Third World (underdeveloped) to obtain one meal.

You will begin in the 3^rd world with the rest of the class as a family and each of you will have 2 chips to spend on food (you will be assigned to a family with 4 of your class mates) . The same group will then move to the second world with each family member having 9 chips. Lastly, you will be alone in the first would with 36 chips to spend on food, travel and donations if you chose.

Your goal is to plan a meal for all members of your group (family). You should consider nutritional adequacy throughout the life span when planning this meal by utilizing your reading for this assignment.

First and second world have the ability to travel and donate chips if they would like but that is not a requirement as the goal is to feed yourself for one meal.

PLEASE ASSUME THAT YOU ARE HUNGRY AND WANT TO EAT!

Topic 2: Ending World Hunger

If we want peace on this planet, we need to end poverty, powerlessness, and hunger in the world! The first 2 links are the things we, as the human race, need to address. Ninety percent of the world’s wealth is concentrated in the United States, this is why the world often looks at us to solve their problems. Sadly, that wealth is also concentrated in a very small % of the US population as well and while individuals like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, and J.K. Rowling (just lost her billionaire status because of her charitable donations) are donating large sums of money, wealth continues to concentrate in a very small minority on the planet and right now 97% of the children being born, are born into poverty. Please review the links below and then post on this topic. Warning: you will also be asked about your service learning so you need to research agencies on My SJS4 and be prepared to commit to where you will be completing your service hours as part of this discussion topic.
