Oral secretion products from chewing insects have been suggested as triggers that augment the release of plant volatiles. Beet armyworm caterpillars might trigger volatile emissions in corn plants through a fatty acid derivative (volicitin) in their oral secretions. Design an experiment to determine whether this chemical elicits a defense response from corn plants through release of plant volatiles.
