2018 Olympics Opening Ceremonies Writing Prompt

INSTRUCTIONS: For this essay, you must watch the opening cultural presentation of the ceremonies Friday night (or later over the weekend). You may want to jot down notes on what you learn while watching the ceremonies. You do not have to watch the parade of nations, unless you want to.

The essay must be at least 2 full pages in length (this does not include the space occupied by your name and such, so account for that used space on a third page to ensure you have 2 FULL pages at minimum). There should be details mentioned from the ceremonies. I will be watching. I always watch. I will know details. I expect details. Did I mention I want details?

Discuss the following:

  • Examine the South Korean approach to showcasing their culture through visual performance. Considering this is a sporting event, why do you think it is important to have a cultural opening, focusing on the history of the host city? How are these two connected, in your opinion?
  • Think about the Olympics’ motto: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
    • How was this motto conveyed in the opening ceremonies? (If you watch the parade of nations and listen to the athlete stories, you can discuss that in greater depth here)
  • What was your favorite part of the ceremonies? What did you think of the official Olympic song, “Let Everyone Shine”? How does that fit with the above motto? Or does it?
