Scenario:

You have been a nurse practitioner for two years. You are precepting an MCCN advanced practice registered nurse who is in his first specialty NP clinical course. Please address the following questions from your student.

• You have been a nurse practitioner for two years. Introduce yourself to the student you are precepting. Describe the area of practice you have been working (try to make this a realistic situation, please describe your “ideal” NP position/job and where you would ideally like to see yourself in three years).What areas of your career do you most want to focus and further develop? What skills, courses, or specific training will you need to further develop for that position? Define continuing education. Is there any specific continuing education requirements for APNs that the OBON specifically requires? Differentiate evidenced-based practice vs clinical guidelines and define each. (9 pts)
• Describe to the student, in detail, the process for obtaining initial specialty (FNP or Acute-Gero) licensure certification. Compare and contrast AANP and ANCC certifying bodies. Describe, in detail, the process and specifics for the steps required for licensure renewal. Please include and define specific forms and policies needed for both processes.(9 pts)
• The student asks you, “Was is hard to get a job after your graduated with your MSN?”Please respond by describing your strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and leadership ability. What plans did you have for self-marketing (what differentiating factor(s) about you and your career history separates you from other candidates)? Using Benner’s Self-Assessment Tool, complete an honest, personal assessment of strengths and weaknesses. (9 pts)
• Describe to the student the definition of an appropriate collaborating relationship with a physician as required by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBON) for advanced practice nurses (4pts).
• Your student inquires to you, “Do you have plans to further your education and reach a terminal degree in nursing?” Please differentiate a Ph.D. verse DNP prepared nurse and provide specific examples of which type of degree would be most appropriate to obtain a Ph.D. as well as DNP. Which degree has a more clinical focus and which is more research focused? Define scholarly writing. If you do not want to obtain your terminal degree in nursing, what other things could you do to become more marketable (hint: include and explain things like submitting abstracts, journal articles, scholarly writing, etc.)? (9 pts)
• Your student inquires to you, “What is the difference between a physician’s assistant (PA) and a nurse practitioner? Is one more marketable than the other? Do they have salary differences?” Please compare and contrast a PA from NP. (9 pts)
• Your student inquires to you, “Can you prescribe to family members?”Please respond appropriately. Also, please explain the process for how to obtain prescriptive authority. Also explain to the student what a “DEA” is, when would this be pertinent to obtain, and how to obtain this. Last, explain to the student what an OARRS account is and if this is required by the state of OH for APNs to have. (9 pts)
• Your student then asks you several questions regarding billing, reimbursement, and coding. Please explain in detail to the student the following: (9 pts)
  • Define ICD 10 codes and CPT
  • Explain the process of credentialing and why it is significant.
• Your student inquires to you, “I have heard a lot about RVUs. What is that?” Define RVU. If your financial compensation is based upon meeting certain RVUs what does this mean? What are realistic RVU target measures for an NP working in an outpatient FNP office (only for FNP track to answer)? What are realistic RVU target measures for an NP working in level 1 ICU or rounding as a hospitalist (only for Acute-Gero track to answer)? (9 pts)
• What is malpractice insurance? Why is this important? What the costs? What is the process for obtaining this? Who pays for this? Is it required to have in OH, in all states, or state specific? (9 pts)
