Introduction
In Module A, you will examine the attributes required for a professional nurse to function effectively as
a leader and manager in the rapidly evolving and changing environment of healthcare. You will
perform a leadership self- assessment to identify your tendencies in behavior when approaching a
leadership role. Additionally, you will conduct an interview with a nurse leader to analyze the decision
making style and process for the best option(s) to problem solving.

Objectives
2. Evaluate the similarities and differences in the functions of a nurse manager and a nurse
leader.
3. Analyze selected management and leadership theories to self-assess strengths and
opportunities.
4. Discuss effective communication techniques including negotiation and conflict resolution to
produce positive professional working relationships.

Clinical Practice Experiences
Face to Face Nurse Leader Interview – Conduct a face to face interview with a nurse leader (above the
Charge Nurse level – Examples include CNO, CNS, Nurse Educator, QI/UR/Infection Control Nurse) to
analyze the decision making style and process for the best option(s) to problem solving. The nurse
leader you interview should be someone you are familiar with in your organization. If that is not
applicable to your situation, please contact your course facilitator to discuss other options. Complete
the Nurse Leader Interview Form for this assignment. A word document of the interview form has
been made available, so you can type directly into the form. Submit the completed Nurse Leader
Interview Form via the Assignments Tool. See the Course Schedule for the assignment deadline.
Leadership Self-Assessment Paper
Scan the Northouse text. You will note Chapters 2 through 16 explore multiple approaches to the
study of leadership. Each chapter represents a leadership theory. Identify three theories of leadership
from these chapters and complete the questionnaire at the end of your selected chapters. Develop
your formal paper by using the elements of the Leadership Self-Assessment Outline as the headings
for your paper (see grading rubric). The content within each of the headings should address all of the
elements outlined in each section. The paper should be three pages in length, excluding the cover

I. Introductory Paragraph (7 points)
A. Identify three theories presented in the Northouse text (each chapter represents
one leadership theory) that you decided to use to evaluate yourself.
B. Explain why you chose the three theories.
II. First Leadership Theory (21 points)
A. Succinctly discuss the primary concepts of your first selected leadership theory.
B. Describe your results (be specific) from taking the test/questionnaire associated with
your first selected theory. Share what the score interpretation reflects about your scores.
C. Discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement that you
discovered in your leadership style based on taking the test/questionnaire associated
with the first theory you chose to evaluate yourself.
