Research Papers

Students are required to prepare 2 research papers (minimum 4 pages each). Detailed

instructions on scientific writing are posted on the class web site. The first paper is on

“Influenza/FLU virus infection” and it is due on March 20.

Antibiotics do NOT work against the flu because it is caused by a virus and not by bacteria.

Best protection is the flu vaccine.

Antiviral drugs: Oral oseltamivir (Tamiflu), inhaled zanamivir (Relenza), or the intravenous drug peramivir (Rapivab).

Heavily advertised, but may not work well enough.

Over the counter (OTC) medications: may help treating symptoms such as aches, coughs, and sore throats.

Rest and drinking plenty of fluids recommended.
