  1. Is it ethical to promise money or other monetary compensation to students for studying hard? What if the losing students actually studied harder than the winner, but the winner only did well because he/she just happened to be brighter? Would giving that student the money be fair to the students who studied hard?

 

  1. Does the fact that these motivation techniques had the desired result by increasing sales or decreasing the use of paper outweigh any negative consequence of such motivators?

  1. Do you think that incentives are a form of bribery? If so, so you think its unethical for companies to do this?

 

  1. What would keep you at a company for a longer period? Would incentives such as an Attendance Reward Program or end-of- the-year bonus make a difference in whether you left a job?

  1. If you were an employee in the insurance company, what would you consider to be the ethical step to take: inform employees of possibilities of layoffs or keep that information confidential until the company is absolutely sure layoffs might happen?

 

  1. What would be the best, most ethical, channel to use when communicating bad news such as layoffs?

 

  1. Do you think it is unethical not to tell your boss that you are looking for another job? What are the situations in which employees have an ethical obligation to provide this information to their managers or supervisors?

 

Chapter 12

  1. In the first situation, do you think it is unethical for the professor to bend the rules under those circumstances? If you were one of the students failed because of high absenteeism and you found out that the professor didn’t fail another student for his high absenteeism, would you think you were being treated unfairly? What would you do?

 

  1. Do you think what the leaders did in the other examples was ethical? Why or why not?

 

  1. In the example with the brother, is it ok to lie in this situation? Do you consider lying as unethical? Are there ever times when lying is better than telling the truth?

 

  1. What are some situations in which bending the rules might be more ethical than following policy?

  1. Do you think the stunts described above are harmless jokes or a form of hazing? If you consider it to be hazing, are they unethical?
  2. Are practical jokes ever acceptable in the workplace? Are some less ethical than others?
  3. Do you think it is unethical for management to support such practical jokes?
  4. Is it unethical for a manager not to warm new employees that they may be subject to a practical joke as part of an initiation process?

  1. In situation A, did you see any ethical problems? If so, what were they and why do you say that? What would you do differently, if anything, if you faced this situation as a leader?
  2. What was the “end” in the case and what was the “means”? That is, what was the change the company wanted to make and what steps did they take to make the change? Did the end justify the means?
  3. In situation B, were there any ethical problems? If so, what were they and why do you think that?
  4. What was the “end” in case B and what was the “means”? That is, what was the change the company wanted to make and what steps did they take? Did the ends justify the means? What would you do, as a leader, if you faced this situation?
  5. What was the change that the department manager wanted to make and how did she do it? Did the end justify the means?

  1. Do you think companies have an ethical responsibility to offer solutions for employees that will help reduce stress?
  2. Do you think companies are to blame for the high stress levels in the workplace?
  3. What are some things that companies can offer or do for their employees?
  4. Do you think employees have any responsibility for ensuring they stay healthy under stressful conditions? If so, what are some thing that employees can do for themselves?
