Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will compare and contrast proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonists in the care of a patient with gastrointestinal disorders.

Review pharmacological mechanisms of gastrointestinal medications. Refer to textbook readings and additional current medication and nursing resources regarding medications used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disease.

Select three medications from each of the following classifications:

• Proton pump inhibitors
• H2 receptor antagonists

Compare and contrast the mechanism of action, purpose, side effects, dosages, and routes of the medications.

Also, include at least three patient education points per classification.
