HR Diagram

Directions: On the next pages (see attached), there are three data tables that give some information on groups of stars. Attached, you will find a blank Hertzsprung‐Russell (HR) plot. Use the data in the data tables to create the HR diagram.

1. Print this document. You should have three data tables..

2. Make a graph, enter the Group 1 stars on the HR plot. Remember that HR diagrams plot

temperature on the x-axis and luminosity on the y-axis. Only plot these values from the data tables. Draw a dot on the plot for each star in Group 1. Draw a circle around all the dots you drew for Group 1 and label it, “Group 1.”

3. On the same graph, enter the Group 2 stars on the same HR plot. Draw a circle around all the dots you

drew for Group 2 and label it, “Group 2.”

4. Again, on the same graph, enter the Group 3 stars on the same HR plot. Draw a circle around all the dots you drew for Group 3 and label it, “Group 3.”

5.Answer the following questions based on the graph:

  • How does our Sun compare to other stars in terms of brightness and temperature?
  • Explain any patterns or trends displayed by the Group 1 stars.
  • Which group of stars represents the main sequence? How do you know this?
  • What stages of development are represented by the Group 2 and Group 3 stars? Describe
  • What determines if a star will end its life as a neutron star, a white dwarf, or a black hole?

these groups in terms of their relative age, size, brightness, and temperature.
