compose reflection of nursing practice each week and submit to Clinical Faculty. Reflective journaling is an excellent way to capture the essence of our profession. Nursing students benefit from spending time reflecting on their practice experiences and their reflections demonstrate the aesthetic knowing of nursing. The students will use the conceptual framework pillars to describe their practice that is founded in caring, uses critical thinking and communication to demonstrate professionalism and wholism.

Specific examples may be cited to illustrate how the Conceptual Pillars were exemplified and may be useful for the following:

– When describing professionalism, specific examples may include, but are not limited to: competence, legal, ethical issues, political and economic issues; particularly if issues arise during the experience.
– Use of effective communication and critical thinking

Questions the student might find beneficial to begin reflection:

How did you feel about your day?
What did you feel good about? What would you do differently?
What did you learn or learn about yourself?
What did you observe in the clinical setting / patient interaction(s) related to
the values expressed in the pillars?
How did you demonstrate caring? (physical care taking may be pertinent, but is
not the essence of the question i.e. how did you interact/connect with the
person from a humanistic perspective)
How did you care for the person, family, or community in a wholistic manner?
Was there a significant event or patient that impacted you – if so how? Did it
change your previous feelings, perceptions?

These questions are only examples to get you started. Do not feel you need to be limited or confine yourself to them.
