Introduction
Sediments are loose grains that may contain rock or mineral fragments. Everyday many sediments are created, transported and deposited due to Earth’s large oceans. They are many ways that these sediments can then be turned into rocks such as through the process of lithification and precipitation.
Weathering
They are 2 different types of weathering Mechanical and Chemical. Mechanical weathering is when crushing, cracking and physical break down of the rocks. Chemical weathering happens when the rock comes into contact with air or water and it alters the composition.
Making a Sedimentary Rock
To become a rock, the sediments must go through a process called lithification. Which has two processes, compaction and cementation. During compaction the grains are smashed together, particle dissolution causes the grains to become locked together like puzzle pieces.
Cementation involves precipitation of microscopic minerals which glues together the grains forming the rock.
