geology 120 week 3

Currently posted in the WEEK #3 Folder:

1) I’ve posted the last 4 Video-Lectures that complete the first topic listed in the Syllabus, which is entitled “I. Underpinnings of the Physical Sciences.”

2) I’ve also posted the first 3 Video-Lectures of our second topic listed in the Syllabus. which is entitled “II. The Geographic Grid.”

These two groups of lectures will be the “meat-and-potatoes” of your work-load for Week #3! (As is typical in this class, the Syllabus offers some optional textbook-readings that simply support the lecture topics…that is, all of the material that you need to know for Exam #1 is presented thoroughly in these Video-Lectures. Thus, of most-importance is that you get good notes, and that you then study your notes enough to memorize the material.)

3) Meanwhile, be sure to be reviewing your Map Assignment #1 (meaning your correctly labeled Base Maps of North and South America)! Be sure to “quiz yourself” over-and-over until you’re sure that you’re prepared for Map Quiz #1. Map Quiz #1 will be made available this week in the WEEK #3 Module sometime between now and Wednesday…you can then take the quiz at any time before Sunday Night @ 11:59pm. The quiz will randomly pick 20 of the places from off the Placename List…you don’t know which 20, so study them all…and then once you finally decide to “open” the quiz, you’ll have 20 minutes (only) to complete the quiz in one single session. (If you haven’t prepared beforehand, then you won’t do well. That’s because there’s not enough time to “google” the answers for each place in the time that’s allocated.)

4) ASSIGNMENT #3 will be posted by Tuesday night. It reviews several specific questions that refer back to your lecture notes from last week…

FIRST: Submit your answers to the “Discussions” Page by Sunday @ 11:59pm

SECOND: Provide a response to at least two fellow students by Tuesday @ 11:59pm (of WEEK #4) that briefly evaluates their answers (e.g., “your answers are fine because” or “are ambiguous because” or “make no sense because” or “could be improved by” or “are very insightful because”) in the context of our lecture material. If you tell someone with a poor answer that “it’s good” without helping them know that it’s poor, then you’ll be marked down. Likewise if you tell someone with a good answer that “it’s good” without telling them why it’s good or why it helped you to better understand the concept, then you’ll be marked down. So as Babe Ruth would say, make sure to “give it the old college try!”
