While sometimes these automatic physiological responses arepositive and assist the body in maintaining proper function, other times, theymay result in adverse health eFects. Consider the case of Gwendolyn King.She experienced symptoms of an unknown cause for 2 years before beingdiagnosed with lupus. These symptoms included joint pain in her hands,fever, rashes on various parts of her body, and eventually pain in her kneesand ankles. Initially, she was believed to have arthritis. However, doctorslater diagnosed her with lupus (Bennett, 2012). ±or 2 years, Kingexperienced compensatory mechanisms that were primarily maladaptive.
