Ergogenic Aids

An ergogenic aid is defined to mean anything which will help to increase athletic performance.

Be sure you have read through Chapter 13, section 7 for this discussion.

Athletes are always looking for any extra edge that they can get on their competition. Because of this, they are extremely susceptible to supplement manufacturers’ claims that their products can enhance performance in any number of ways. Ergogenic aids are those products that supposedly enhance performance, although none actually do even though the term itself means ‘giving rise to energy.’ One such ergogenic aid, for example, is caffeine (which is not energy – it’s a drug, a stimulant).

As an example, here are four peer-reviewed research articles, all with varying degrees of conclusions on use of caffeine as an ergogenic aid; read the abstract or introduction and/or conclusion to make sense of some of the data since these sections generally are written for better understanding:

Caffeine currently is on a Monitoring List as an ergogenic aid, which means, while not banned, it is monitored for a pattern of misuse by an athlete:

Items for response/comment:

  • What kinds of questions should any athlete ask before taking ergogenic aids?
  • Share any experiences that you or someone you know has had with performance-enhancing nutritional supplements.
  • Given what you have learned about these products, would you use them again? Under what circumstances?
  • Or, if you wish, your response can focus on whether you think aids of any type should be permitted, based on what your preliminary knowledge of performance-enhancing measures, such as Blood Doping.
  • Are there other types of performance-enhancing procedures you wish to discuss? The following news story brought to my attention by a student in the course covers the news about methamphetamine in supplements used as ergogenic aids a few years ago:
  • What are your comments or responses to this and where do you think we should ‘draw the line.’
  • What do you think about the Japanese skater sent home for use of masking agents (see link inside of article about these agents) https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/12/sport/japan-doping-kei-saito-olympics-intl/index.html
