diversity in healthcare

Nurses have the ethical and moral obligation to reach out and care for people who are vulnerable, marginalized, and/or alienated from health care. Some of these include individuals who are at the end-of-life; homeless; incarcerated; intellectually disabled; live in poverty; undocumented immigrants; elderly; veterans; and current military personnel. In addition, populations who have a lack of education (low literacy); have addictions or are living with HIV/AIDS; or who have gender differences (lesbians, gay, bisexual or transgender) are all at higher risk in terms of health care needs.

Choose one of these vulnerable populations and create a journal entry that describes your chosen population. Provide a rationale for your choice. Include a paragraph response for each of the following items:

  • Include what experiences you have had personally and professionally relating to this population.
  • What do you want to learn from researching this population in your next few assignments?
  • Think about your feelings regarding this population group.
  • Consider what biases you might have.

Your journal entry does not need to be in APA format. It should be 1-2 pages in length. It can be written in an informal style, but must cite references that are used.
