Task 2. Written Report
The administration of GTN to patients presenting with an inferior wall myocardial infarction (IWMI)
is precautionary or contraindicated (depending on ambulance service guidelines) due to the side
effects that may potentially result. However, the veracity of the potential side effects and therefore
the significance of the concerns have recently been questioned.
The chair of the Council of Ambulance Authority (CAA) education working party has asked you to
examine the evidence for the use of GTN in patients presenting with an IWMI and prepare a report
for Paramedic Educators.
The report must be an evidence-based analysis of published data from peer-reviewed sources. The
following must be addressed:
• Describe the epidemiology of out of hospital acute myocardial infarction in Australia
• Describe the pathophysiology (cellular level) of IWMI
• Discuss the pharmacodynamics of Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN) with relation to its use in
patients presenting with an IWMI including benefits to the patient and possible side
effects
• Analyse the evidence for the recommended paramedic management of patients
presenting with an IWMI
Structure and Format
The report must include the following:
• Cover page including title of report and word count
• Contents page
• Introduction
• Discussion/body of the report with sub headings
• Conclusion
• Recommendations based on the evidence presented
• Font: Arial 12
Referencing
The required referencing style is Vancouver. A link to Vancouver style is included in the
“Assessment” area of Blackboard for this course.
