Case Study

Ryan Riley is 9 months old. He has been sick off and on for the past week with a cold. He is not interested in eating or playing and has no energy. Ryan’s mother, Jessica, leaves him in the care of her boyfriend, Casey, while she is working. Casey puts Ryan in his crib and leaves him alone all evening. During the evening, Ryan feels very sick and is having problems breathing. Jessica immediately takes him to the hospital.

At the emergency department, Dr. Gordon asks Jessica how long Ryan has been sick, how many wet diapers he has had in the past day, and when he last ate. Jessica tells Dr. Gordon that Ryan has had a cold for the last week or so, but got sick just today. She admits that she doesn’t know when he last ate or the number of wet diapers he has had. She tells Dr. Gordon that he has been working many hours during the past several days. Dr. Gordon diagnoses Ryan with RSV infection and dehydration.
