Insights from the sources

The first insight focuses on the impact of transformational theory on nurse integrity levels and patient outcomes. In reference to nursing theories, research conducted by Butts and Rich (2021) and Xu (2022) show that transformational leadership theory is an essential theory that influences human behavior at the workplace. In this regard, transformational leadership theory holds that a leader and respective followers are involved in a hierarchical relationship in which they build and motivate each other to attain specific goals, creating a value system congruence between the follower and the leader. Studies by Asrar-ul-Haq and Anwar (2021) show that leadership behavior directly impact the workflow processes, workplace, and quality of service delivery in clinical settings. Research by Duggan et al. (2015) explains the fundamental precepts of this insight by explaining that leaders who demonstrate elevated rates of integrity at work are more likely to create a team of clinicians who exhibit better and ethical provision of care and present improved nurse-patient interactions. Studies by Kelley et al. (2019) show that better nurse-patient interactions enhance the provision of patient-centered care, reduce cost expenditures and increase the quality of life and wellbeing of patients.

The second insight highlights the impact of transformational leadership, quality of leadership engagement, and empathy on workplace creativity, motivation, and overall job satisfaction. Studies by Bass (2021) and Krishnan (2022) show that leaders who embody a transformational approach to leadership have a strong vision and motivate their juniors and colleagues to adjust personal and corporate expectations, inspirations, and perspectives towards attaining a common goal. Studies by Kouzes and Posner (2022) show that leaders who embody transformational leadership positively influence followers’ commitment levels and satisfaction in clinical settings. Since transformational leadership is centered on initiating change, leaders who utilize this leadership theory approach are labeled as change agents. Change agents focus on utilizing their knowledge, personalities, and qualities to motivate their teammates to attain their objectives, share their personal and organizational vision and generate empowerment spirit (Marshall & Broome, 2021). As such, transformational leaders create influence by inspiring and motivating followers to work through given guidelines and attain organizational goals (Tucker & Russell, 2021). Kouzes and Posner (2022) adds that leaders who demonstrate higher levels of engagement and empathy in clinical settings have a 95% chance of creating a motivated, productive, and creative teams with higher job satisfaction levels when compared to leaders with low engagement and empathy levels.

Description of a Leader

I work in a mental health facility. The facility clinical nurse leader (CNL) is the epitome embodiment of a transformational leader. The CNL has impeccable empathy levels, commendable ethical and integrity standards, high engagement levels, and very supportive. Studies by Kelly et al. (2022) show that mental health facilities top the list of the most stressful clinical settings. In this regard, nurses working in these facilities face daily acute and chronic stressors. Based on these prepositions, nurses working in mental health facilities need support to cope with physical, emotional, and psychological turmoil. The presence of a supportive CNL empowers providers in my facility to cope with daily stressors. The CNL provides nurses with practical guidance and reliable, up-to-date protocols to provide effective and proficient evidence-based care. In this regard, her support allows nurses to facilitate the provision of care while exhibiting high levels of empathy, creativity, career satisfaction, and productivity.

Extent of Skills Effectiveness

The CNL personality characterized by a strong vision, empathy, and integrity has empowered nurses in the mental health facility to create trusting interactions with their colleagues and patients. The CNL track record of upholding the principles of ethics such as justice for all and patient autonomy has made her a “go-to-person” when a nurse needs advice to pull through an ethical crisis. Based on healthcare data and reports for the past three years, her creativity and support have lowered stress levels and rates of medical errors by 75%. Her contribution towards lowering medical errors has reduced litigation-based expenditures, enhanced patient survival rates, and enhanced creativity and productivity.
